How to configure location services for fully managed Android devices

The use of location services on fully managed Android devices (COBO) can be controlled with the help of policies. For example, to prevent users from sharing their location in apps such as Google Maps. On the other hand, it is also possible to specify that the location service must always be activated.

Aim

In diesem How-To zeigen wir Ihnen, wie Sie die Standort-Richtlinien für COBO-Geräte konfigurieren können.

Implementation

Note! Location data from Android devices (regardless of whether BYOD, COBO or COPE) is generally not transmitted to the Cortado management portal. Only fully managed devices that have been set to the lost mode can be located.
  • In the Cortado administration portal, select Administration→ Policies.
  • Add a new policy by clicking on the plus icon.
  • Then select Android and as the setup method Fully managed device, Work profile or Work profile on company-owned device (example in illus.).

select fully managed device

  • Under Location services (arrow in illus.) you can specify whether the services should be User controlled, Always ON or Always OFF (right in illus.).

select location service

Always ON

  • Under Location services in the drop-down menu, select the Always ON option and assign the policy to the users/groups/devices.
  • The location services are then activated on the device and can no longer be deactivated by the users (left illus.).
  • The location accuracy also remains activated and cannot be changed (right illus.).
Note! The "Always ON" policy has no influence on the location permissions for individual apps. Even if location services are always switched on, they can be configured by the users themselves for each app.

location services always on

Always OFF

  • Under Location services in the drop-down menu, select the Always OFF option and assign the policy to the users/groups/devices.
  • The location services are then deactivated on the device and can no longer be activated by the users (left and middle illus.). If a location has already been shared, the transmission is terminated (right illus.).
  • Apps and services now no longer have location access.
