Using a set of policies will help you to configure the Wi-Fi settings for fully managed devices or company-owned devices on which there is a work profile in place for your users. This allows you to set up networks and the internet individually and tailor them to your needs.
Note! You can find out how to use a profile to make the company Wi-Fi available to your users in our help article Create Wi-Fi profile for Android Enterprise devices.
Aim
In this How-To we will show you how to configure Wi-Fi policies for company-owned Android devices.
Implementation
- In the Cortado Administration Portal select Administration→ Policies.
- Add a new policy by clicking on the plus icon.
- Then select Android and select Fully managed device or Work profile on company-owned device as the setup method.
- Under Network & Connectivity you will find all the policies you can use to restrict the use of Wi-Fi networks.
- 1. Allow configuration and changing Wi-Fi networks
- 2. Allow sharing Wi-Fi networks added via MDM
- 3. Allow changes to Wi-Fi networks added via MDM
- 4. Allow enabling/disabling Wi-Fi
- 5. Allow using Wi-Fi Direct
- 6. Allow adding Wi-Fi networks
- 7. Minimum Wi-Fi security level
- 8. Allowed Wi-Fi SSIDs
- 9. Blocked Wi-Fi SSIDs
1. Allow configuration and changing Wi-Fi networks
- Deactivate this checkbox, if you want to prohibit users from making any changes to the Wi-Fi settings
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- As soon as the users open the internet settings on the device (arrow in the middle illus.), they receive a message that these settings are: Blocked by your IT admin (right illus.).
- This ensures that no changes can be made to the Wi-Fi settings.
2. Allow sharing Wi-Fi networks added via MDM
- Deactivate this checkbox, if you want to prohibit users from sharing the company Wi-Fi.
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- Using this setting will hide the Share button (middle illus.) in the internet settings for the Wi-Fi (right illus.).
3. Allow changes to Wi-Fi networks added via MDM
- Deactivate this checkbox, if you want to prohibit users from making any changes to the Wi-Fi settings on the company Wi-Fi.
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- As soon as the users open the company Wi-Fi settings on the device (arrow in the middle illus.), they receive a message that they are blocked by the IT administrator (right illus.).
- This means that no changes can be made to the Wi-Fi settings (although disconnecting and sharing are still allowed).
4. Allow enabling/disabling Wi-Fi
- Deactivate this checkbox, if you want to prevent users from switching the device Wi-Fi off or on.
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- The Wi-Fi can no longer be deactivated (right illus.) or activated in the internet settings on this device.
5. Allow using Wi-Fi Direct
- Deactivate this checkbox, if you want to prevent users from using Wi-Fi Direct.
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- Wi-Fi Direct can no longer be activated in the device's network settings (arrow in the right illus.).
6. Allow adding Wi-Fi networks
- Deactivate this checkbox, if you do not want to prevent users from adding new Wi-Fi networks.
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- Now new Wi-Fi networks can no longer be added in the device's internet settings (arrow in the right illus.).
7. Minimum Wi-Fi security level
- Here you can select the minimum security level a Wi-Fi must have before users will be allowed to use it.
- There are four levels available. If no security level is selected, even open Wi-Fi networks, for example, can be used.
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- Wi-Fi networks with a lower security level than the one specified are no longer able to be used (arrow in right illus.).
8. Allowed Wi-Fi SSIDs
- Enter here those Wi-Fi networks that are the only ones permitted to be used (example in illus.).
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- Only Wi-Fi networks that have been entered in the management portal under Permitted Wi-Fi SSIDs can be used (arrow in the right illus.).
9. Blocked Wi-Fi SSIDs
- Enter the Wi-Fi networks here that are not allowed to be used (example in the illus.).
- Then assign the policy to the users, groups or devices.
- The users can then find this setting in the Cortado app on the device under policies (arrow in left illus.).
- Wi-Fi networks that have been entered in the administration portal under Blocked Wi-Fi SSIDs can no longer be used (arrow in right illus.).
